ANTONIO DE GOBBI

Italian-born Antonio de Gobbi is particularly valued among European basses for his versatility and his outstanding operatic interpretations, both in terms of musical and theatrical performance.

After his studies at the Conservatorio di Parma with M° Sandrini, he made his debut at the Scala in Milan. Ever since then, he has been working with the world's most renowned conductors and directors, such as Liliana Cavani, Jonathan Miller, Graham Vick, Giorgio Strehler, Giuseppe De Simone, Pier Luigi Pizzi, and Hugo de Ana. Especially his collaboration with the great directors of our time has strengthened and perfected his highly versatile interpretations of a wide range of characters, reaching from the comic to the dramatic genre.

Antonio de Gobbi has sung on Italy's greatest stages in productions such as BOHEME, TOSCA and ITALIANA IN ALGERI in Venice, NABUCCO at the Arena di Verona, UN BALLO IN MASCHERA at the Filarmonico di Verona, AIDA at the Festival Avanches, and IL TROVATORE in Ravenna, to name just a few of the highlights of recent years. At the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, he appeared in MACBETH, with James Colon as conductor, and in UN BALLO IN MASCHERA and IDOMENEO with Simon Bichkov. Other productions include DIE MEISTERSINGER with Zubin Metha, LA FORZA DEL DESTINO with Valere Gergiev at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Verdi's REQUIEM with the London Symphony Orchestra in Brussels, and Rossini's STABAT MATER at the opening of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Antonio de Gobbi also spent several seasons as a guest of the Teatro alla Scala, where he was hugely successful with productions such as RIGOLETTO and TRAVIATA, directed by Riccardo Muti, L'INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA with Zedda, la FANCIULLA DEL WEST with Giuseppe Sinopoli, or LUCREZIA BORGIA with Gian Luigi Gelmetti.

One of his greatest triumphs, not only because of his vocal accomplishments, but also because of his outstanding theatrical performance, has been his interpretation of 'The Conte' in a production of LE NOZZE DI FIGARO conducted by M° Pinzauti and directed by Pier Paolo Pacini. In 2005 he received huge success with Dulcamara in L'ELISIR D'AMORE in Sassari where he returned to perform Publio in LA CLEMENZA DI TITO and Il Conte di Walter in LUISA MILLER.

In 2007 he performed ASSASSINIO NELLA CATTEDRALE with Ruggero Raimondi in Bari, GIANNI SCHICCHI in Naples and Bari with Leo Nucci in the title role, directed by Roberto De Simone.

In summer 2007 he has performed AIDA under M° Maazel in the outstanding frame of Isolino on the Maggiore Lake (Italy). In 2008 he sang in Bari as Pistola in FALSTAFF directed by De Simone. He was recently a guest at the Festival De Perelada with Monserrat Caballé. In Perpignan he sang the role of ED LALO in LE ROI D'YS.

Further performances until 2009 have been ATTILA at the Filarmonico di Verona I LOMBARDI ALLA PRIMA CROCIATA al the San Carlo di Napoli, ROMÈO ET JULIETTE at the Arena di Verona, TRE CONCERTI PUCCINIANI in Las Palmas, Timur in TURANDOT in Bari, Zuniga in CARMEN and a Serata di Gala with Domingo at the Arena di Verona. He also performed in AIDA with Taormina Arte. In Autumn 2009 he was in Sassari with CENERENTOLA as Don Magnifico.

In 2010 he performed with the Scala in Milan in the production of TANNHÄUSER, with the Teatro Lirico in Cagliari in CEBERENTOLA (Don Magnifico) and with the Teatro Verdi in Sassari in Rossini's IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA (Don Basilio). He sang in the Musical I PROMESSI SPOSI in Milan/San Siro as Avvocato Azzeccagarbugli. The Musical was also given in the Summer 2010 in Agrigent in the Valle dei Templi and broadcasted on RAI Uno in September.
In 2011 Antonio De Gobbi performed in Rossini's STABAT MATER in Lombardy. In the Summer he will sing at the Festival "Taormina Arte" in AIDA (Il re) and NABUCCO (Il Sacerdote di Belo) directed by Enrico Castiglione.
 
Antonio de Gobbi has recorded a number of CDs and also appeared in several TV and DVD productions as well as at various cultural events: Verd's Rigoletto (SONY), Rossini's Turco in Italia (KIKKO RECORDS), Winter's Maometto II (NAXOS), Assassinio nella Cattdrale on DVD (UNITEL-DECCA).
